Heat Stroke in Dogs
Heat Stroke
What is heat stroke? Heat stroke is when your dog’s body temperature rises above normal limits causing a fever which can lead to seizures, organ failure and even death.
Signs of heat stroke can include excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, collapsing, and seizures.
If you think your dog is suffering from heat stroke, move them to a cool shaded area and offering them fresh drinking water. If your dog does not appear to be cooling down and getting worse seek veterinary attention immediately.
Preventing heat stroke
Only walk your dog when it’s cool outside
Provide plenty of shade and water
NEVER leave your dog in the car in hot weather
Flat faced breeds such as Pugs & Bulldogs are at higher risk so be extra careful
Dogs who have thick heavy coats and who are overweight are also at high risk
Be careful when walking your dog on certain surfaces as tarmac and artificial grass can get extremely hot
Preventing heat stroke is much easier than treating it, so be mindful and sensible when walking your dog in warmer weather
